«Eccoci qua: siete venuti per vedere i vecchietti che ballano?». L’ha urlato al microfono prima di iniziare il concerto Pete Townshend, ma avrebbe potuto urlarlo chiunque altro, lo scorso weekend in California. Perché, carte d’identità alla mano, non si può non parlare di vecchietti: Ron Wood è del 1947, poi ci sono Pete Townshend e Neil Young del '45, Roger Daltrey è del 44, Mick Jagger e Keith Richards del '43, Paul McCartney del ’42, il premio Nobel Bob Dylan e l’impeccabile Charlie Watts sono del ’41.

Il primo dei due fine settimana di Destert Trip, ovvero di storia del rock, è andato in archivio, e da oggi si riparte con il secondo. Quasi ottantamila persone ogni sera hanno potuto ballare e cantare grazie ai vecchietti che cantavano e ballavano. Con un’energia da far invidia ai trentenni. In tre giorni sono sta suonate da Sympathy for the Devil a Masters Of War, da Hey Jude a Heart of Gold, da My Generation a Wish You Where Here. Canzoni che hanno fatto la storia politica e sociale di tutto il mondo, che sono state simbolo di più di una generazione, che hanno fatto innamorare e scendere in piazza, che hanno ispirato altre canzoni e hanno riempito magliette bianche e pagine vuote.
Lì nel deserto, per tre giorni, chitarre, bassi, batterie e voci hanno urlato che il rock ’n roll è ancora vivo. Grazie a dei vecchietti, ma questo è un altro discorso. E non c’è stato nulla di triste o stucchevole, nulla di malinconico o autocelebrativo: basta prendere un video di una canzone qualsiasi di uno qualsiasi dei sei protagonisti per rendersene conto.

Non sono mancati i momenti storici. Basti dire che i Rolling Stones hanno fatto una cover dei Beatles (Come Together, annunciata da Jagger con "ecco la canzone un gruppo sconosciuto"), e il Beatle presente ha ricambiato proponendo un brano delle pietre rotolanti (I Wanna Be Your Man). Oppure basti pensare a quando Sir Paul McCartney è stato raggiunto sul palco dal ribelle Neil Young: il primo, che ha lottato e lotta ancora (per gli animali e per la pace, per i diritti e contro la povertà), il secondo, che ha lottato e lotta ancora (per l’ambiente e contro le multinazionali), hanno suonato insieme A Day in the Life, Give Peace a Chance e Why Don't We Do It in the Road? A proposito di politica: Roger Waters ha attaccato Donald Trump. E, per farlo, non ha scelto una canzone a caso: Pigs.

Insomma, tre giorni in cui c’è stato assolutamente di tutto. Certo, c’è chi sognava una quarta giornata: magari con il giovane Springsteen (classe 1949) e con gente come Robert Plant (’48) e
Jimmy Page (’44), ma questo forse sarebbe stato decisamente troppo. Un’unica nota stonata, volendo, c’è. Se, tra una ventina d’anni, un Desert Trip avrebbe dei possibili “eredi” (Pearl Jam, U2 e Foo Fighters, per fare dei nomi), ovvero la generazione successiva a quella assolutamente inarrivabile e inavvicinabile che si è esibita in questi giorni, pensare a una possibile line up nel 2055 appare praticamente impossibile. Il panorama attuale under 30 è tristemente desolante: la lezione dei sei mostri sacri che si sono esibiti in California non è servita. Quindi, in attesa che qualche ampli si accenda e che qualche riff faccia sobbalzare dalla sedia, non ci resta che ballare e cantare con i vecchietti. Più in forma che mai. Più rock che mai.
